Pair Go

Introduction:  A fun, two-round tournament featuring teams nominally made up of one male and one female player.  Team members are not allowed to consult with each other during the game. Costumes are encouraged to add to the festive spirit, but are not required.

The teams are separated into two tournaments: the Main Event and the Qualifier.  The top four ranked pairs (excluding professionals) will play in the Qualifier, and the other pairs will play in the Main Event.

Any and all mixed-gender teams are allowed in the Main Event. In addition, same-gender teams are allowed in the Main Event, but at least one player must be kyu-level.

********** MAIN EVENT (Most Players) **********

Location:  Main Playing Area (Grand Ballroom)

When:  Two rounds will be held on Thursday, July 30, starting at 7pm.

EligibilityAnyone with an AGA ID who registers to play.  Sign up before Monday, July 27, at 10pm.  All teams must include the names of the two players by the time registration closes. Sign-up sheets will be available prior to the tournament. Professional players are allowed to join the Main Event, but cannot be selected for the IAPGC Qualifier.

Rules:  Japanese rules are in effect.  Komi is 6.5.  In addition to the basic rules, special rules by the WPGA governing four-person play are in effect.  Please be sure to read over the rules regarding out-of-turn play and penalty points.

Time Controls:  Bonus time will be used.  Each player will get a base time of 20 minutes and a bonus time of 15 seconds per move.

Handicaps:  Handicaps are determined by averaging the players’ ranks on each team.

Prizes:  The top six table winners will receive recognition and Go Bucks.  The remaining table winners will receive certificates.  Awards will be presented after the Main Event

Additional Info:  Games are not AGA-rated.

Four pairs of players are assigned to each table. The winners of round 1 will be paired in round 2 to determine the table winners.  The losers of round 1 will be paired in round 2 to determine the 3rd and 4th place winners.

********** IAPGC QUALIFIER (Top Players) **********

Location:  Strong Players Room (Old Meeting House).

When:  The first round will be held on Tuesday, July 28, starting at 7pm.  The second round will be held on Thursday, July 30, starting at 7pm.  Awards will be presented after the Main Event on Thursday ends, around 9:30pm.

EligibilityAll players must be have U.S. citizenship.  Sign up before Monday, July 27, at 10pm.  All teams must include the names of the male and female players by the time registration closes. Sign-up sheets will be available prior to the tournament. Professional players cannot be selected for the IAPGC Qualifier.  

You will be notified by email of your participation before Monday evening.

Additional Info:  The winning pair from 2025 will be invited to play in the IAPGC finals in Tokyo later this year.  There are currently no plans for the 2026 winning pair to attend the IAPGC.  Further details to be announced.  The AGA will cover 50% of the travel expenses to Tokyo.

Games are not AGA-rated.
